Overwhelmed by oppressive poverty, people often wander from one failed business start-up to another in a desperate attempt to create some revenue. No, we are not suggesting that you tie up people like a goat. However, we do need to help them get a focused business plan together.
Doug has been working with three fellows -Isaac Karanga, Elvis Mutahi (first two men on the right) and John Gitau – assisting them as they conduct small business trainings.
Elimina Simiyu attended the last training. She keeps poultry in her back yard. Her main problem was learning to separate the business from the family and start keeping accounts. She says her family would wake up thinking of chicken and were literally eating up her revenue. Through the insights she gained from the recent course, Elimina has vowed to start calculating her input and output.
Nancy Khaoya, whose husband Edward pastors the Vineyard in Kitale, also attended the recent training. She has started a tailoring shop that employs very poor ladies in the neighborhood around the church. Through the course she had a revelation that this course can empower these ladies to start small businesses. The three men – John, Isaac, and Elvis made a commitment to assist the ladies in this ghetto.
Creating a Future
Joseph Msanii leads the Youth Group at the Vineyard Church in Matunda and also attended the seminar. Unemployment among the youth in Kenya is easily 40%. It has been said that poverty is the parent of crime. Joseph is well aware of this connection. He says that he had an insight at the recent seminar and plans to connect the young adults in his youth group to this program.
